Position Purpose:
The Custodian position at Bates College is responsible for the general appearance and cleanliness of assigned areas and buildings, including housekeeping services for student residences. This position includes routine work such as waste removal, dusting, mopping, and vacuuming floor surfaces, cleaning restrooms, restocking consumables, and non- routine work such as window and wall washing, snow shoveling and sanding of walks, steps and porches.
Job Duties:
Routine Work
  • Monitor public areas
  • Waste removal
  • Dust mop, sweep, wet mop floors
  • Vacuum rugs and carpets
  • Scrub, clean, and disinfect restrooms and restock consumables, such as towels, soap and other items
  • Dust and clean walls, doors, woodwork and other above floor surfaces
  • Dust, clean and polish furniture
  • Notify supervisor of equipment or facilities needing repairs or replacement
  • Take an active part in the College Recycling Program
  • Change light bulbs
  • Lifting, Moving, and rearranging furniture
  • Perform related work as required or instructed
Non-routine Work
  • Window washing
  • Furniture and drape Vacuuming
  • Wall washing
  • Wall, vent and radiator cleaning
  • Waste receptacle cleaning and washing
  • Snow shoveling and sanding of walks, steps and porches
  • Clean and disinfect surfaces contaminated with blood and/or other body fluids
  • Assisting other departments as necessary
  • Any other duties assigned
Minimum Qualifications:
Education
  • High school diploma or GED.
Experience
  • Experience in operating mechanical cleaning equipment required.
  • Previous custodial services experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of Federal/State mandated programs preferred.
Skills and Knowledge
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions in the conduct of the job.
  • Establish and maintain working relationships with supervisors, co-workers and building occupants.
  • Ability to perform manual tasks requiring moderate physical strength.
  • Ability to use tact and diplomacy to effectively handle a broad range of interpersonal situations and to respond appropriately to conflicts and problems.
  • Ability to maintain high degree of confidentiality and sensitivity to privacy.
  • Ability and willingness to work weekends, evenings, on-call and other non-traditional schedules.
